How Do We Work?

Our search engine automatically crawls local apartment vacancies which look to be creditable and accurate. Our sources are made up of both individual direct listings through Rent Donkey, classified websites, and corporate property management companies. We provide this service for free to all parties involved.

Our rentals are updated constantly, so that they'e always up to date. If a rental is available somewhere online, you can rest assured that we have it!

How'd It Get Started?

In short: Searching for rentals is a pain! If you're buying a house, you can use MLS, which lists almost every house for sale in the country in an easy to use and digestible format. No such luck for apartment hunters.

Previously if you wanted to find an apartment, you had to check 10 different property management sites daily. You then had to try to determine exactly where each subsequent building is located, what is included, and how it compares with the countless other options. You inevitably end up with various lists strewn about on your desk, with several tabs of Google Maps open on your computer, and hours wasted with no real progress.

Many people also search classified listing sites, as they often have a large array of options to choose from, with many of them being privately listed. However, that comes with it's own challenges, as it can be hard to digest the large volume of continuous listings.

It's no wonder so many people get so overwhelmed that they eventually settle on the first reasonable accommodation they can find, or hold off moving altogether.

We got so fed up with this struggle that we decided to do something about it. By bringing ALL the sources together under one roof, you now only have to check one single site - and we're always up to date. We place all the results on a map, so you only search for rentals in the area you actually want to live. Imagine that! Finally, we allow you to search the various fields you care about: price, bedrooms, when it's available, if pets are allowed, etc.

Suddenly finding a new rental isn't so painful after all.

Why "Rent Donkey"?

Why not? No, seriously, finding an available domain name these days is hard work. We tried to find a boring professional name, but all those were taken. So we opted to go for one of the most ridiculous names possible. Heeeeh-haw!

Why Atlantic Canada? What About Other Cities?

We originally by tracking Halifax only. Since we live in Halifax, it was a natural choice. When combined with over 10,000 apartments in the Halifax area and a large base of students, it made perfect sense. We are thankful to say that response was overwhelmingly positive, so with strong demand, we expanded to include all of Atlantic Canada. We are happy to say that we track apartments in every community in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, and Newfoundland.
